Marvel Studios Thor: Ragnarok [Film Review]

FILM SUMMARY: In Marvel Studios' "Thor: Ragnarok," Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok--the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization--at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger--the Incredible Hulk!

"Thor: Ragnarok" led the box office again fro the 2nd weekend since the release. As the show started, the audience seem excited and predicted that this was going to be a good and entertaining movie. I agree with them. This was one of the best Marvel films I've seen. I think that Chris Hemsworth is the perfect star to play the role as Thor. For this latest installment, Chris Hemsworth thought it's time that it needed to be done differently. Directed by Taika Waititi, many of us enjoyed the Thor humor that he has created. Thor: Ragnarok is brilliant and funny!

Released November 3, 2017. See it in theatres

Fan Expo Vancouver 2017 [Event Recap + Cosplay Photos]

What an amazing weekend it was at Fan Expo Vancouver! Fan Expo is a 3-day convention celebrating pop culture, fandoms of sci-fi, fantasy, anime, gaming, comics, and many other things for the inner geeks. It was exhausting for many of us, but it was worth all the fun, the memories and a chance to meet cosplayers, artists, and special guests. A slight change this year is that the ticketing booth was near the end of the promenade just before FlyOver Canada instead of the usual entrance next to the Pan Pacific Hotel. This made the area in the foyer much less crowded.

Unfortunately, Arrow star, Stephen Amell as well as Legends of Tomorrow star, Caity Lotz had to cancel last minute due to other commitments. I would've been nice to see them at the panel to hear them talk about their characters they play. But we did catch up with The Flash Q&A panel with Danielle Panabaker, Carlos Valdes, Tom Cavanagh, Candice Patton, and Grant Gustin. Candace brought her puppy, Zoe, with her.

Click here for the full Q&A Panel.

Here are some of the talented artists, illustrators, and writers that we've met:

Last, but not least... there were lots of amazing cosplays out there. Very creative! Great work everyone!

Until next year...

Breaking the Ice with Icewine

It is a world-renowned style of wine that can only be crafted under specific -8 degree to -10 degree C temperatures, for which our cool Canadian climate is ideal. But to many Canadians, Icewine remains a bit of a mystery drink — they see a type of wine with deep colours in a skinny little bottle that they aren’t used to seeing on the wine shelves in the liquor store. It looks different than a typical bottle of wine, so questions are raised about how it should be stored, serving temperature, pouring etiquette, proper glassware and what should be enjoyed with it.

“Many people assume Icewine to be too sweet for their palate – perhaps comparing Icewine to the sweetness in maple syrup. says Scott McGregor, Winemaker at Lakeview Wine Co., a division of Diamond Estates Wine & Spirits. “In fact, this is not the case. Great Icewine has a delicate balance of sweetness and acidity, with concentrated flavours and fantastic pairing opportunities.”

Making Icewine is a detailed and complex process that starts during harvest when the winemaker decides which grapes are going to be left on the vines until winter’s deep freeze hits. There they will stay until late December or January — exactly when they are picked is determined by Mother Nature when she graces the vineyard with three or four days where the temperature stays below -8°C. The grapes, which now resemble little frozen marbles, are hand-picked and pressed while frozen to extract a small amount of sweet, concentrated nectar — typically yielding about 15% of what those grapes would have produced had they been picked during the earlier table wine harvest. Following the unique harvesting procedures, Icewines are then fermented and aged in the same process as a regular dinner wine. The Icewine is then bottled in their signature tall bottles and the sweet treat is ready to enjoy!

Recently, one of Scott’s creations – the Lakeview Cellars Cabernet Franc Icewine won a Gold Medal and Best Value distinction at the 2017 InterVin International Wine Awards. Not only did this Icewine score highly in the Red Icewine category – it also received top honours with “Best Dessert Wine” in the show– being among the top four scores of over 1200 entries from around the world.

Scott answers some of the common queries about Icewine:

How do I store my Icewine? Icewines will keep for several years stored in the right conditions — on a slant to keep the cork wet, away from vibrations and with a consistent temperature around 12-15°C. But as with any table wine, not all Icewines will benefit from aging, and that all depends on the varietal selected. Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc and Merlot Icewines should be enjoyed while still young while something like a Riesling will age nicely. Once the bottle is opened, you should enjoy it within three to five days.

How do I serve Icewine? Icewines are ideally enjoyed chilled between 10-12°C, so if you are taking out of the cellar it may need some time in the fridge. But it is finicky about the temperature. Too warm and it will lose its crispness; too cold and it cuts the aroma. Due to how sweet and rich an Icewine is, about two ounces per glass should suffice.

When do I pour it? There is a stereotype that Icewine is a dessert wine and should be held to the end of the meal. And while it is great as a dessert, it also matches well with seafood or other main course dishes that involve something caramelized.

What kind of glass is best? Ditch the skinny dessert glasses. To fully enjoy the aromas of Icewine, use a standard white wine glass that will allow the wine to breath and give you space to swirl the wine before enjoying it. Pro tip – chill the wine glasses in the fridge for 10 minutes before pouring the Icewine in.

Do I have to drink it straight? Absolutely not. A splash of Icewine is a great addition to a cocktail or to add a little something extra to a glass of sparkling wine.

What should I pair it with? If you are enjoying your Icewine with dessert, the first rule is you don’t want the dessert to be sweeter than the Icewine. If you have a white, enjoy it with fruit-based desserts while red Icewine is exquisite with dark chocolate. They are also ideal with a variety of cheeses — blue veined, triple cream, goat cheese, washed rind cheeses, aged cheeses, salty parmesan. If pairing with a main course, go spicy — Thai, Indian, Mexican or Creole. It’s a nice balance to the sweetness of the wine, and may help cool off a burning palate.

Jon Favreau's All-New Big-Screen Adventure "The Lion King" Roars to Life with All-Star Cast

BURBANK, Calif. (Nov. 1, 2017) – The all-star lineup for director Jon Favreau’s new take on Disney’s 1994 classic animated film “The Lion King” includes stars from the film, TV, theater and music arenas. Featuring pioneering filmmaking techniques, the film welcomes back to the big screen iconic characters that audiences have long treasured—but in a whole new way. From Disney Live Action, “The Lion King” is slated for theatres on July 19, 2019.

Link to Beyoncé’s Facebook Announcement:
https://www.facebook.com/beyonce/photos/a.252225550600.296474.28940545600/10159693635960601/?type=3&theater

“It is a director's dream to assemble a talented team like this to bring this classic story to life,” said Favreau.

Lions rule the African savanna in “The Lion King,” which welcomes Donald Glover (“Atlanta,” “Solo: A Star Wars Story”) as future king Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter (“Dreamgirls,” “Lemonade” visual album) as Simba’s friend-turned-love interest Nala, and James Earl Jones (“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” “Field of Dreams”) as Simba’s wise and loving father, Mufasa, reprising his iconic performance from Disney’s 1994 animated classic. Chiwetel Ejiofor (“Twelve Years a Slave,” Marvel Studios’ “Doctor Strange”) was called on to portray Simba’s villainous uncle Scar, and Alfre Woodard (“Juanita,” Marvel’s “Luke Cage”) portrays Simba’s no-nonsense mother, Sarabi. JD McCrary (OWN’s “Tyler Perry’s The Paynes,” Apple’s “Vital Signs”) fills the shoes of Young Simba, a confident cub who can’t wait to be king, and Shahadi Wright Joseph (NBC’s “Hairspray Live,” Broadway’s “The Lion King”) brings tough cub Young Nala to life.

Every kingdom comes with a trustworthy advisor or two. John Kani (“Coriolanus,” Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: Civil War”) was cast as the wise baboon Rafiki, and John Oliver (HBO’s “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart”) was tapped as hornbill Zazu, Mufasa’s loyal confidant. When Simba goes into exile, he relies on two newfound friends—Seth Rogen (“Sausage Party,” “Neighbors”) lends his comedic chops to naïve warthog Pumbaa, and Billy Eichner (“Billy on the Street,” FX’s “American Horror Story”) joins the cast as know-it-all meerkat Timon.

While most of the animals in the kingdom respect the king, the hyenas have other plans. Florence Kasumba (NBC’s “Emerald City,” Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther”) portrays Shenzi, Eric André (Adult Swim’s “The Eric André Show,” FXX’s “Man Seeking Woman”) is Azizi, and Keegan-Michael Key (“Predator,” Netflix’s “Friends from College”) plays Kamari.

“The Lion King” is directed by Favreau (“The Jungle Book,” Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man”) and produced by Favreau, Jeffrey Silver (“Beauty and the Beast,” “Edge of Tomorrow”) and Karen Gilchrist (“The Jungle Book,” “Chef”). Jeff Nathanson (“Catch Me If You Can,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales”) penned the screenplay based on the 1994 screenplay by Irene Mecchi, Jonathan Roberts and Linda Woolverton. Tom Peitzman (co-producer “Kong: Skull Island,” “Alice in Wonderland”) and Thomas Schumacher (“The Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast”) are executive producers, and John Bartnicki (“The Jungle Book,” “Chef”) is co-producer. The award-winning team of artists tapped to bring the African savanna and its animal inhabitants to life include visual effects supervisor Rob Legato, who conceived the virtual production on “Avatar,” won Academy Awards® for his work on “The Jungle Book,” “Hugo” and “Titanic,” and was nominated for an Oscar® for his work on “Apollo 13.”

The film’s animation supervisor is Oscar®-winner Andrew R. Jones (“The Jungle Book,” “Avatar,” “World War Z”). VFX supervisor is Adam Valdez ("The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers”), who won an Oscar for his work on “The Jungle Book.” Five-time Oscar nominee Caleb Deschanel, ASC, (“Jack Reacher,” “The Patriot”), is director of photography, and James Chinlund (“War for the Planet of the Apes,” “Marvel’s The Avengers”) serves as the production designer. Oscar winner Ben Grossman (“Alice in Wonderland,” “Hugo,” “Star Trek into Darkness”) is virtual production supervisor, and Mark Livolsi, ACE, (“The Jungle Book,” “Saving Mr. Banks,” “The Blind Side”) and Adam Gerstel (“Transformers: The Last Knight,” “The Jungle Book”) are editors. Hans Zimmer (“Dunkirk,” “Hidden Figures”), who won an Oscar for his score for the animated classic, will score the adventure.

ABOUT THE MOVIE:

From Disney Live Action, director Jon Favreau’s all-new “The Lion King” journeys to the African savanna where a future king is born. Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub’s arrival. Scar, Mufasa’s brother—and former heir to the throne—has plans of his own. The battle for Pride Rock is ravaged with betrayal, tragedy and drama, ultimately resulting in Simba’s exile. With help from a curious pair of newfound friends, Simba will have to figure out how to grow up and take back what is rightfully his. The all-star cast includes Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Billy Eichner as Timon and Seth Rogen as Pumbaa. Utilizing pioneering filmmaking techniques to bring treasured characters to life in a whole new way, “The Lion King” roars into theatres on July 19, 2019.

CandyTown Casts its Magic Spell Over Yaletown This Holiday Season

Vancouver, B.C. (November 1, 2017) - Santa and the elves are busily sprinkling magic dust over Yaletown, transforming the neighbourhood into an enchanted land filled with palate-popping treats, Yuletide music and cozy carriage rides. That's right: CandyTown is here again, and with it comes a fresh crop of experiences that invite holidaymakers to indulge in the sweetest surprises of the season.

Now in its sixth year, CandyTown is a free annual festival that aims to delight visitors of all ages with energetic performances, elf-approved activities and - of course - delicious food, drinks and candy. Taking place on Saturday, November 25 from 12pm to 7pm, the celebration is hosted by the Yaletown Business Improvement Association, and draws upwards of 15,000 revelers each year eager to immerse themselves in a Christmas storyland come to life.

Small tykes whose list of seasonal must-do's is topped by a visit with the jolly man himself can make a beeline for the North Pole (Bill Curtis Square at the Canada Line Station), where Santa Claus will be carefully listening to holiday wishes. Prepare for a visit by the Ice Queen as well, who will share her surprisingly warm-hearted story and pose for photos. Santa will be on-site at 12pm - 3pm, and the Ice Queen will make her appearance at 3pm - 7pm. The photo opp is free, though donations will be accepted for B.C. Children's Hospital (suggested donation is $5 minimum per family). After the excitement of meeting their favourite Christmas characters, tired tots (and parents) can take a rest during a picturesque horse-drawn carriage ride. The carriage departs from Pacific Boulevard and trundle along Pacific, Hamilton and Davie streets for a relaxed cruise, with a suggested $2 donation to B.C. Children's Hospital to help spur on the horses.

CandyTown's tasty theme will pervade throughout the festival with interactive candy-making demonstrations and sweet treats available for purchase. Visit the Candy Hut for DIY candy kabobs, and take the adults only self-guided cocktail tour to sip special holiday cocktails from Opus Bar, the New Oxford, WildTale, The Distillery and many more. Have a sweet tooth? You won't want to miss the tantalizing array of goodies offered by such purveyors as Bluebird Cakery, The Good Chocolatier and Boulangerie La Parisienne. Heartier appetites can flock to food trucks REEL Mac and Cheese, Old Country Pierogi and Tacofino, as well as restaurant favourites offered by Earls Kitchen + Bar, Zend Conscious Lounge and more.

Of course, Christmas isn't complete without an artisan street market - after all, handcrafted goods make the best gifts. Visitors can stock up on clothing, décor, pet accessories, jewellery and flora at the "All I Want for Christmas" market, featuring local vendors like 3H Craftworks (handmade sock puppets, stockings and tea cozies), Standout Boutique (exquisite jewellery), Divine Vines (gorgeous flowers arrangements), Woo To See You boutique and others.

Kids of all ages can make crafts, get their faces painted and learn how to twist a balloon animal at the Starlight Children's Foundation and Rotary Club tents. In keeping with the seasonal spirit, both charities will gratefully accept donations - because the only thing better than Christmas fun is Christmas fun that gives back to those in need. New this year, guests can swoon over professional firefighter models featured in the 2018 Hall of Fame Calendar. Now in it's 31st year, the calendar supports the B.C. Professional Firefighters Association Burn Fund and Vancouver General Hospital, the CKNW Orphans' Fund and Vancouver Firefighter Charities' Snacks for Kids program for underprivileged children in Vancouver.

Visitors can also view live an ice sculpture demonstration on Helmcken Street (between 1pm and 7pm); and NEW THIS YEAR we've expanded the festival to Yaletown Park (Nelson and Mainland). Warm up as you browse the exhibition Together, which explores how Canadians are helping to drive global change (displayed at Yaletown Park); play some free Canada-themed games while enjoying live music and performances by roaming musicians and stilt walkers.

"CandyTown is a truly special event, one that casts its magic over children, families, couples and friends alike," says Annette O'Shea, executive director of the Yaletown BIA. "This is the time of year to get swept up in the joy of holiday activities: live Christmas music, the aroma of freshly baked treats, visits with Santa Claus and delightful handcrafted goods. CandyTown is the perfect place to experience all of that in one neighbourhood."

CandyTown takes place on Saturday, November 25, from 12pm to 7pm along Mainland Street in the heart of Yaletown. For more information, visit yaletowninfo.com

Book Review: The Thing with Feathers by author McCall Hoyle

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Sixteen-year-old Emilie Day is not like the other girls from her town on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. She has epilepsy, is homeschooled, and would rather be reading classic literature than be the center of attention. Ever since her father’s death and her diagnosis, risk has not been in Emilie’s vocabulary. Unfortunately, all the safety she’s built for herself is about to be stripped away when, on her doctor’s recommendation, Emilie is sentenced to spend her junior year at North Ridge High School. Fueled by frustration, Emilie doesn’t plan to stay…or tell anyone about her epilepsy. But Emilie isn’t banking on meeting new friends or getting to know the handsome and charming Chatham York. And she definitely isn’t counting on falling for him when they’re paired up to do a research project on Emily Dickinson. Chatham challenges Emilie to face her fears—but he doesn’t know what she dreads most is a public grand mal seizure.

The Thing with Feathers Release Day Trailer

MY THOUGHTS: I've always enjoyed reading YA novels and I really enjoyed this book as I could easily follow the storyline. The author kept the story interesting from start to end. As I was reading each chapter of the book, it gave me all these feelings about how this girl, Emily, goes on with her day. I could relate. Many of us fear changes and some of us find courage to overcome them and accept new challenges. This is an inspiring story for readers of all ages.

Emilie Day believes in playing it safe: she’s homeschooled, her best friend is her seizure dog, and she’s probably the only girl on the Outer Banks of North Carolina who can’t swim.

Then Emilie’s mom enrolls her in public school, and Emilie goes from studying at home in her pj’s to halls full of strangers. To make matters worse, Emilie is paired with starting point guard Chatham York for a major research project on Emily Dickinson. She should be ecstatic when Chatham shows interest, but she has a problem. She hasn’t told anyone about her epilepsy.

Emilie lives in fear her recently adjusted meds will fail and she’ll seize at school. Eventually, the worst happens, and she must decide whether to withdraw to safety or follow a dead poet’s advice and “dwell in possibility.”

From Golden Heart award-winning author McCall Hoyle comes The Thing with Feathers, a story of overcoming fears, forging new friendships, and finding a first love, perfect for fans of Jennifer Niven, Robyn Schneider, and Sharon M. Draper.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

McCall Hoyle writes honest YA novels about friendship, first love, and girls finding the strength to overcome great challenges. She is a high school English teacher. Her own less-than-perfect teenage experiences and those of the girls she teaches inspire many of the struggles in her books. When she’s not reading or writing, she’s spending time with her family and their odd assortment of pets—a food-obsessed beagle, a grumpy rescue cat, and a three-and-a-half-legged kitten. She has an English degree from Columbia College and a master’s degree from Georgia State University. She lives in a cottage in the woods in North Georgia where she reads and writes every day.

"Unroll the Fun" with Welch's Fruit Snacks

Just in time for Halloween, these Welch's fruit snacks are the perfect treats. We also like them for the juicy flavours and the perfect chewy texture.  Today, I packed one in my son's school lunchbox.

I just received the Welch's Fruit Snacks VoxBox from Influenster. My son and I were so excited to share our review. Our family loves Welch's Fruit Snacks. They are made with real fruit and they are so yummy!

The newest product we want to feature is the Welch's Fruit Rolls with a delicious berry flavour. This one is also made with real fruit. The kids love the fun of unrolling them, stretching them, peeling them, and eating them up.

My son (in the photo below) ready to do his video review on the Welch's Fruit Snacks. Check out his video on Brandon's Adventures Blog here.

Sleep On It Premiere New Single "Window" With Alternative Press

Sleep On It has premiered a new song titled "Window" with Alternative Press today. "Window" is the second single from the band's upcoming debut full-length album Overexposed. Fans can listen to the new song via Alt Press, here.

With evident passion, TJ Horansky explains his inspiration for writing the song: "Window" was inspired by the passing of my good friend's mother. This friend is very close to me; we were roommates for seven years. He was always there for me when I was feeling lost, discouraged and heartbroken. When his mom got sick, it happened very quickly. Watching him lose his mom like that put a lot of my problems in to perspective. In a sense, the song is told from different points of view. The first verse is an inward look at how I tend to selfishly preoccupy myself with my own problems. The chorus is from the perspective of losing someone that was a foundation in your life, so much so that they changed the way you looked at the world. That thought is what sparked the analogy of a "window".

Overexposed is set to be released on November 3rd, 2017 through Equal Vision Records. The album, which was produced by Seth Henderson (Knuckle Puck, Real Friends) with additional production from Derek DiScanio of State Champs, is now available for pre-order at https://sleeponit.lnk.to/overexposed

Save-On-Foods celebrates grand opening of Family Immunization Clinic at BC Children’s Hospital

(Vancouver, BC) - Save-On-Foods is celebrating the grand opening of BC Children’s Hospital’s new Family Immunization Clinic, which the grocery company funded through a $15 million donation.

The clinic is the first in the country to be located in a hospital, and will provide patients and their families with all publicly-funded immunizations. It is intended to increase immunization rates among children, especially those with complex medical conditions. It will also serve as a hub for consultation services for physicians across B.C. and support new research.

In addition to the immunization project, this $15-million donation will fund urgently-needed equipment for the hospital.

“The Save-On-Foods family has already donated over $30 million to fund innovative programs that profoundly affect the health and well-being of BC Children,” said BC Children’s Hospital Foundation president and CEO Teri Nicholas. “As Lead Benefactor of the Immunization Project and a funder of urgent equipment, this transformational $15 million gift brings their all-time giving to $45 million – making Save-On-Foods our biggest donor of all time.”

“There is nothing more important to Save-On-Foods than the health of our communities, families and kids,” said Save-On-Foods president Darrell Jones. “That’s why, with the help of our customers, team members and supplier partners, we are thrilled to support the talented and innovative folks at BC Children’s Hospital as they provide this important service to our neighbours and some of our province’s most vulnerable young patients.”

Kid Food Nation Winner from Vancouver

It was an amazing and unforgettable experience at the Kid Food Nation Gala that took place on Sunday October 22, 2017 at the Fairmont Château Laurier in Ottawa. The Government of Canada, Boys and Girls Club of Canada, President's Choice Children's Charity, Corus Entertainment celebrated the winners of the Kid Food Nation Contest along with their families. Kids from across Canada submitted their homemade healthy recipes. Thousands of entries were received and only 26 winners were chosen to attend the Gala and a trip to Ottawa as the grand prize.

Prior to the Gala, the kids did an individual photoshoot session. They are all so adorable in their nicely dressed attire.

Brandon was excited to tell point to me that his Cheesy Quesadilla was one of the featured recipe for the appetizers on the table.

Was great meeting Owen Charters (President & CEO of Boys and Girls Club of Canada) and Ginette Petitpas Taylor (Minister of Health, MP for Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe).

The event was hosted by Carlos Bustamante (of YTV's The Zone and reporter for ET Canada). And yes, the kids were thrilled to meet their favourite YTV celebrity. He was very good with the kids and also signed autographs for them.

This is a wonderful inspiration to all the kids knowing that they can achieve their goals, learn about healthy eating and also have the chance to inspire others as well.

Congratulations again to all the winners!

Coinciding with the 40th Anniversary of "Leftoverture," and the release of "The Prelude Implicit," KANSAS embarked on their biggest headlining tour in decades. The overwhelming success of that tour led the band, along with Inside Out Music, to release selected songs from the tour as a live album.

"When we saw how much our fans enjoyed the Leftoverture 40th Anniversary Tour shows, we knew we had to record a live album," said KANSAS drummer, Phil Ehart. "When it came to finding someone to produce it, we thought the best possible person would be the guy that produced 'Leftoverture' forty years ago. So, we called Jeff Glixman!"

"I'm really excited with how this live album sounds," adds producer, Jeff Glixman. "This band is on fire. Producing this live album was truly an undertaking, but I am confident that KANSAS fans will enjoy the end result."

"Leftoverture Live & Beyond," will be released on November 3, 2017, on Inside Out Music and is distributed by The Orchard. The album will be available as a double CD digipak, four 180 Gram Vinyl boxed set, and digitally on iTunes and Google Play.

5 Tips to Stay Energized and Eat Healthy Throughout the Year

HOW TO GET BACK ON TRACK WITH HEALTHY EATING

Most people are in for a big adjustment as they transition into a busy fall routine. After summer vacations and back-to-school preparations, it’s important to get back on track with everyday healthy eating habits. To keep you and your family energized throughout the year and powered up to tackle the day, Halifax-based Dietitian Coleen Nolan shares her top five healthy-eating tips:

1. BREAK THE FAST. Fuel your engine by eating a nutritious breakfast that provides energy and essential nutrients for healthy growth and development, maintains healthy body weights and improves focus. Skip the sweet cereals and go for higher fibre varieties (more than 4g per serving) with less sugar (less than 10g per serving), or try smoothies. For something different, go for soaked oats.

TIP: The night before, combine steel-cut oats, protein powder or skim milk powder, hemp hearts, with boiling water, stir, top with nut butter, berries, cover and chill. It’s loaded with tasty and healthy fuel to start your day off right. It’s delicious!

2. SWAP OUT SUGAR. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that less than 10 per cent of daily calories come from added sugars. For a typical 2,000 calories per day diet, this is less than 12 teaspoons per day maximum in added sugars. In fact, one can of soda pop may contain 10 teaspoons of sugar. Yikes! Try flavouring plain or mineral water with fruit, veggies, or herbs, cucumber and fresh mint, or lemon, lime and oranges – it’s super refreshing!

TIP: Got juice lovers at home? Mix fruit juices with water and ice to reduce the amount of sugar over time. It’s easier than cutting it out all together and works great with chocolate milk and plain milk, too. Also, try switching from flavoured yogurts to plain yogurts and simply add fresh or frozen fruit with drizzle of honey or maple syrup. How to Swap when Baking? Try substituting one-third of the sugar in recipes with skim milk powder to decrease the sugar.

3. GRAB’N GO SNACKS FOR SUPERMOMS AND DADS. With hectic schedules, busy work days, and after-school activities, grown-ups need all the energy they can get. Too busy to cook from scratch or tempted by sugar-and-fat-laden treats? Look for nutritious, convenient and portable snacks at your grocery store. For example, Snack’n Go Salads are made with superfood ingredients including wholesome grains, fresh vegetables, and healthy plant-based protein and fibre to keep you satisfied longer between meals (which can help promote healthy weight). Plus, they are vegetarian, contain less than 200 calories, less than 10g of fat, with no added preservatives, and no added sugar. They come in a convenient 115g snack-size bowl with a handy snap-off spoon.

TIP: Snack’n Go salads are great on their own, as an energizing snack between meals or a post-workout boost, or as a protein topping on green salads, or a healthy side to any meal. Need a little more protein? Add a small handful of nuts, cheese, or a hard-boiled egg to any of the Snack’n Go Salads.

4. POWER UP YOUR SNACKING ON-THE-GO! Be sure to add a source of protein and fibre into snacks to carry you through until your next meal. Try a power smoothie made with plain Greek yogurt, fresh fruit, spinach or kale.

TIP: Set up handy, easy-to-grab snack bins in the cupboard and fridge. Once a week, replenish the bins with fruits, nuts, cheese, vegetables and hummus.

5. MEAL AND SNACK PLANNING FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY. Try setting up a menu for the week and get input from the family. Before supper, or the night before, veggies can be washed and cut for the next day. Building basic life skills in the kitchen will come in handy when your kids are grown up and will help save time for busy parents.

TIP: Studies have shown that kids who grew up eating together as family tend to have healthier eating habits as adults.
