Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino (Available for Limited Time)

I'm sure you have heard of the Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino. It's is currently available in Canada, US, and Mexico as of April 19th, 2017 for only a limited time. It's the craze that some Starbucks fans are excited about. I had a chance to get one myself the day they had this new drink released.

What it tastes like: The pink cream is a bit sweet (not overly sweet, so it's perfect), the blue syrup drizzled around the side is a bit sour, the whipped cream makes it creamy and topped with coloured powder. If you're not into sour stuff, then I suggest not ordering this one. Also, seems like a lot of colouring though. I've read a lot of mixed reviews for people who have tried it and those who haven't tried it. It might not be healthy due to high sugar content, but I think it's ok to have this kind of drink once in a while as a treat only.

What are your thoughts? Let me know in the comments below.

Tips for Those Attending Their First Convention

Next month (May 12-14th, 2017), the ultimate Vegas Gaming and Anime convention is coming to Vegas! LVL Up Expo is a non-profit gaming convention, covering various gaming platforms, technology, design, and anime! This year will be their fifth year in Vegas.  Check out the Las Vegas travel deals for the best flight and hotel packages!

LVL Up Expo - Las Vegas

I've been attending Anime conventions for the past few years now and I really enjoy it. I've been only attending as part of the media doing photoshoots, photography, and documenting. I enjoy connecting with artists and cosplayers and to learn more about the anime characters and the materials people use for their props and clothing. I still have yet to participate in cosplaying for fun -- one day.

I'd love to share my tips for those who are attending their first convention.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR FIRST CON

Check the Convention Website

So you're attending a convention for the first time and you're wondering what you will see or what events are happening. The convention or expo would have a program schedule posted on their website, usually the day before. Look through the exhibitor list and guest list and find out which type of passes are more suitable for your interests, whether it's a one-day pass or a weekend pass.

Large Crowds

Big conventions are always going to be crowded with lots of people. For multiple day conventions, usually weekdays are less crowded. If you do go on a weekend, attend at an earlier time. If your local convention is near a mall, expect the food courts to be crowded as well.

Celebrity and Guest Appearance Panels

Panels are always a popular one. Make sure to go early to ensure a good spot. It is possible that the doors will close once capacity is reached.

Vendor Exhibits

Vendor exhibits and booths are fun to check out the cool stuff like collectibles, toys, comics, clothing, crafts and original artwork from talented artists. Bring some cash with you in case you decide to score a rare item. If there is something you really want, take advantage of the discounts or promotions that vendors offer only during the convention. Did I mention it gets crowded?

What should you wear?

There's lots to see and you'll be walking lots, so wear shoes that are comfortable. There aren't really anywhere to sit, except I've seen people sitting along the side in the hallway. The only place you can sit and relax is at a cafe if your local convention has one inside. Now's your chance to wear that geeky or comic shirt you might have hiding in the back of the closet.

If you are cosplaying (and you're wearing heels), bring an extra pair of comfortable shoes. Like I said earlier: lots of standing and walking.

What items should you bring along with you?

Charge up your phone or bring a portable charger if you have one. Bring a camera for photo ops and/or cosplay photography. Remember to ask the cosplayer first if it is ok to take their picture. Also, whether you're in costume or not, make sure your weapon prop meets the safety guidelines and always follow the convention's rules (posted on their website). Respect others, have fun and connect with new friends.

Photos of the Day: Cherry Blossoms

Cherry BlossomsHope everyone had a wonderful Easter break. Spring has sprung and it's that time of year where cherry blossoms (aka Sakura, in Japanese) are in full bloom. The view of the cherry blossom trees that line the streets of Vancouver are amazing. Also, it's the season of allergies for me. I had terrible hay fever over the weekend and it's not fun. Anyway, just want to share some photos of these beautiful cherry blossoms.

Kiss Stress Goodbye with Three Relaxing Beauty Buys for April Stress Awareness Month

Did you know April is National Stress Awareness Month? I just want to share some of my recommendations for some stress-relieving beauty and skincare buys.

The American Institute of Stress links stress to many serious conditions such as neurological disorders, autoimmune diseases, and more. By adopting simple steps into your everyday routine, you might find those daily stressors a whole lot easier to deal with.

Below are three stress relieving beauty products to unwind from our daily beauty concerns, including a conditioning mascara that reduces tension from lash extensions, a green tea infused hair mask that restores dry and damaged hair and a vegan dark spot targeting treatment pad.

1. neuENVY peptide enhanced mascara ($32, Nordstrom.com) Is a major stress reliever for lash extension lovers. The conditioning mascara contains a synergistic blend of powerful peptides, antioxidants and vitamins which can be used to extend the life and lushness of lash extensions between trips to the salon.

2. The Mane Choice Green Tea & Carrot Deep Strengthening & Restorative Mask Treatment ($17.99, Target) this nutrient infused hair mask is the perfect antidote for dry, lifeless hair. The formula contains green tea extract which research has shown is a major stress reliever and works to reduce shedding and increase hair growth by stimulating the hair follicle and increasing blood flow.

3. Arbonne Intelligence Genius Nightly Resurfacing Pads & Solution ($98, Arbonne.com) this effective retinoid solution reduces the appearance of dark spots and skin discoloration which is often a result of a major breakout. As with all Arbonne products, it is vegan and gluten-free!

Joanie Leeds - "Brooklyn Baby!" - New Album Grows in Brooklyn - May 19 Release

New York -- Six years ago, award-winning singer/songwriter Joanie Leeds packed her bags and moved from Manhattan's Upper West Side to the vibrant, artistic neighborhood of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Here she found not only a place to start a family, but also a magnificent melting pot metropolis that offered dazzling adventures on a daily basis. Inspired by her love for all things Brooklyn, Joanie will release her eighth family album, Brooklyn Baby!, on May 19, 2017.

Produced by Jesse Lauter (Tedeschi Trucks Band, Elvis Perkins, Carl Broemel from My Morning Jacket), Brooklyn Baby! is a real genre-bender, containing elements of folk, Southern rock, hip hop, pop and punk presided over by a singer whose sheer command of vocal artistry is second to none.

Songs about the park system (“Ferry Nice”), public transportation (“Subway”) and Brooklyn's most famous dish (“Pizza”) are a given, but the heart of the album embraces both a Brooklyn mentality and sentimentality with love (“Love is Love”), thirst for education (“Library Book”), healthy eating (“Apples in My Apples”), and Yiddish expressions (“Shayne Punim”). The album closes with Joanie's take on Brooklyn-born Lou Reed's gentle tune, "Sunday Morning."

Gifted with a soulful, "rock solid" voice that ranges from low and bluesy to high, light, and breezy, Joanie Leeds is an exceptionally versatile artist who brings serious musicianship to the table right alongside a terrific sense of fun and fashion. Says SiriusXM's Kids Place Live host Mindy Thomas, "Joanie Leeds is that cool babysitter who would let you try on her lip gloss once your mom left the house. You idolized her, and your mom knew she could trust her. That's Joanie. Only she's also likely to completely ROCK THE ROOF OFF YOUR HOUSE!"

Joanie Leeds & The Nightlights have performed in dozens of cities nationwide at such prominent venues as The Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, The Smithsonian, the CMAs, the Hang Out Festival, Symphony Space, Wolf Trap, and LA's Skirball Center.

Joanie Leeds' original kids' music won first place in the USA Songwriting Competition, as well as winning an Independent Music Award, Parents’ Choice® Gold Award, NAPPA Gold Award, and Family Choice Award, and Joanie was a finalist in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest and the International Songwriting Competition. Joanie's music has been highly praised in People magazine, Parents Magazine, The New York Times and The Washington Post. Her tunes are played on many radio stations nationwide and have climbed the chart to #1 on SiriusXM's Kids Place Live and WXPN's Kids Corner. Joanie is also a PJ Library musician!

Prior to Brooklyn Baby!, Joanie Leeds released seven critically acclaimed, full-length albums and two full-length DVDS, in addition to numerous videos on her Youtube channel. She is currently at work on more music videos, while maintaining a busy teaching and performance schedule.

Brooklyn Baby! will be available online at www.joanieleeds.com, Amazon, iTunes, CDBaby, TuneCore, and other related digital outlets.

Restaurant Review: White Spot (on Lougheed Hwy in Burnaby, BC)

I've been here with my family many times and we live close to this White Spot location (at 4129 Lougheed Hwy, Burnaby, BC). I never had a problem eating at this place. The servers are always friendly. If you are having lunch, get here before noon to avoid the long wait. From my experience, if you come late, it gets busy and have to wait for a table for around 15-20 minutes average (especially during the weekends). Food is great! I usually order the all-day breakfast meal. This time I decided to order something different. I ordered chicken pot pie with side salad. It was the best chicken pot pie I'd ever had. The portion was huge and filling (for a person with small stomach like me)! I ended up packing it to have later. My husband and son ordered burgers.

Top 5 Growing Tips From Star of "Heirloom"

Actress and organic tomato farmer, Paten Hughes, co-creator and star of the hit digital series Heirloom on Vimeo, shares her top five tips to planting your own tomato garden, below. More about the series below that.

■  When buying your starter plants, pick varieties you haven’t heard of and give yourself room to experiment. You’ll learn what grows best in your plot. I try to stay away from Brandywines... they aren’t the most fruitful variety for me. I might have a few come in at the end of July, but that’s about it. Try Mariana’s Peace (smaller than brandywines, but a similar taste) and Sun Golds cherry tomatoes.

■  Pluck off the bottom leaves of the plant shoot so that the leaves start a few inches above the ground. You don’t want the leaves touching the dirt if possible: and you also don’t want your plant to be bottom heavy! Not only will this help prevent any sort of mite from eating away at the leaves, it will also help train the vine so that your tomatoes begin forming higher up and away from the ground. (Note: when your tomatoes start coming in, you don’t want them touching the dirt either. If that does happen, prop them on top of a stone or brick until they finish ripening.)

■  Don’t overwater! A lot of people assume tomatoes need a ton of water, but they thrive with lots of dry heat. I use a drip irrigation set to drip water by each plant for 5 minutes a day. Of course, my ‘maters are in a very hot Sonoma County, so it’s going to be different in Georgia or Oklahoma. If there does happen to be some rain, I cut the irrigation for that day.

■  Mark what varieties you plant so that you can keep track for next season. Sometimes it just requires changing up the location in your garden plot to know whether a variety will thrive with you or not. The famed Lynn Brown (played by Tom Wopat in HEIRLOOM) made me keep planting Indigo Rose’s for several seasons, insisting it was the trendy tomato. I finally changed up the corner of the garden, and indeed the tomatoes finally fully ripened and were bountiful. Persistence pays off.

■  Rip out your plants at the end of each season (December, for me): just because you might get tomatoes from last year’s plant doesn’t mean you should. Heirlooms are extremely susceptible to soil disease, so you should be using new plants each season. Change up your soil each year, as well, or at least mix in a bunch of new soil. If you’re planting in the ground rather than pots (which is better!), move planting around every two years to give the soil a rest.

About Heirloom

Heirloom, A New Romantic Comedy About Farm-Table Millennials Grows To Nearly 4M Views

Digital Series Stars Paten Hughes, Margaret Colin, Tom Wopat, Ryan Cooper, John Lavelle, Luis Vega and Pascale Armand

Heirloom, an original digital series is proving to be a hot hit and is celebrating reaching nearly four million views. The aspirational romantic comedy follows a young woman who rediscovers herself after inheriting a small plot farm in Sonoma County California. Her journey back to the small town lifestyle and new circle of farm-table friends is complicated only by a love triangle, small business start-up challenges, and grower learning curve. All nine, 10-minute season one episodes are available on Vimeo: http://vimeo.com/channels/heirloomtheseries.

Inspired by the real-life experience of co-creator and series star Paten Hughes, Heirloom was filmed on Hughes’ actual organic heirloom tomato farm in Sonoma and features her real produce, chef customers, and beloved dog, Spencer.

The new series brings together a cast whose credits span stage, screen, and television. Penned by playwright and TV writer Bekah Brunstetter (This Is Us, Switched-at-Birth, American Gods) and directed by Michael Melamedoff (Weakness, TruTV’s The Problem with Apu) Heirloom follows down-on-her-luck actress Emily (star Paten Hughes, one of the original members of Kevin Spacey’s Old Vic New Voices Network) through a series of horrific auditions until her mom (Gossip Girl’s Margaret Colin) calls with the news that her Uncle Bob has left her his farm in Sonoma. Emily leaves her depressed writer-boyfriend in New York (played by the ingeniously sarcastic John Lavelle, Selma) to head west with her dog Spencer as she re-invents herself as a tomato farmer. Her new tomato farm soon yields new friends, new business, and a new shot at love. Heirloom also stars Ryan Cooper (upcoming Rock That Body), Pascale Armand (Tony Nomination for Eclipsed!), and Luis Vega. Tom Wopat (Dukes of Hazard) takes a turn as famed farmer Lynn Brown.

Director Melamedoff helmed an all-female camera crew in the Sonoma unit, cinematography by Kat Westergaard (Lovesong, Sundance 2016), production design by Angel Herrera, and featuring original music by Laura Brenneman. Julie Crosby, Paten Hughes, Kevin Kinsella, James Richard, and Brooke Stevens are producers.

Restaurant Review: Harvest Community Foods

I'm always looking for some new Ramen places to try. My husband found this place, probably searching online and came across this place. Harvest Community Foods is located in Chinatown or Strathcona area in Vancouver (243 Union St, Vancouver, BC V6A 2Z7). When we first walked in, it was different as it didn't seem asian/Japanese. The owners were Caucasian. I found out more about this place and learned that they started as a grocery and local foods shop.

There are Udon and Ramen bowls. Most expensive Udon/Ramen I've ever ordered. Taste is average; not the best and not the worst I had. The toppings were soft-boiled eggs, vegetables, radish, pork shoulder, and candied bacon. I shared a Ramen bowl with my son. I like the chili oil. It's' not too spicy. First experience wasn't so good as I found a piece of plastic wrap in my noodles. The people are friendly though. There aren't many tables so this is better for small groups or individuals.

Restaurant Review: Golden Thai (Capilano Mall, North Vancouver)

The dishes used to be good. I order the noodle soup most of the time. It has been a while since I visited Capilano Mall. I don't go to North Shore as often as I used to. It was lunch time and I decided to order the same thing I had before at this place called Golden Thai at the food court. I wasn't thrilled as I noticed they don't serve the chow mien type noodles anymore in the noodle soup. I got rice vermicelli noodles instead. I eat those at home all the time.

So after the first bite and sip of the soup, it was so bland. I went back and asked for packets of soy sauce. It made the flavour of the soup better. Near the end of finishing my noodles, I took a spoonful of soup and it was so gritty and salty! I tipped the bowl a little and saw a pile of salt that weren't even dissolved and mixed, realizing that it was sitting under all those noodles. "Seriously?", I thought. No wonder the first few bites were bland. The only good thing about it is that there were lots of meat though.

I ended up spitting out the rest and couldn't eat anymore. Not going back there again.

My rating: 2 stars

BETA5 Chocolates Adds Some Pop to the Easter Bunny's Hop

April showers provided the inspiration for BETA5 Chocolates' "Springtime in Vancouver" themed Easter collection. Awaken the senses with bright, budding Easter eggs, and chocolate rain clouds filled with peanut butter raindrops. Owner and Pastry Chef, Adam Chandler, channels his team's creative energy to reflect the beauty of spring in this fanciful collection of Easter treats. And just in time for spring, the BETA5 pop-up returned to the Cambie Village on Tuesday, April 4.

BETA5 Chocolates

In a nod to Vancouver's wet west coast weather, chocolate clouds shower peanut
butter raindrops to encourage Easter eggs to blossom in Raspberry + Cocoa Nib, Coconut + Passionfruit, and Hazelnut Praline flavours. Beautiful inside and out, this year's intricately layered eggs are truly works of art. Featuring alternating flavours of dark chocolate and house made praline, the eggs are available in two sizes - single-serving "bulbs" ($7 each, or 3 for $18) and larger "buds" ($39 each) that make the perfect shareable dessert. This collection embodies BETA5's unique approach to melding art and design into award-winning chocolate creations.

The sought-after creators of cream puffs, innovative chocolate collections and unique ice cream creations are returning to the pop-up space at 3345 Cambie Street from April 4 through May 15. The pop-up location will feature a new mural installation by local graphic artist and painter Scott Sueme. Look for the return of BETA5's ice cream sandwiches, as well as ice cream socials for those warmer evenings ahead.

BETA5 Chocolates recently introduced three new tea-infused flavours to their cream puff family: Mango Bubble Tea, Strawberry Jasmine and Matcha. Hopping in for Easter are Lemon + Yogurt Cloud and Peanut Butter Cup. Featured Easter cream puffs will be available starting April 4 through 13 at the Cambie Street pop-up location, and at both the Industrial Avenue and pop-up locations for Easter weekend.

Recipe: Southern Italian Turkey Pasta Puttanesca

I remembered the first time I prepared roasted whole turkey on my own, it turned out pretty good. It was time-consuming because I was doing this all on my own (with a bit of help from little one). I didn't like all the leftovers. I ended up packing them in containers and froze them. Some I gave to my parents when I visited them. With the leftovers, I made congee, soup, and even stir fry with vegetables.

Here's a new recipe idea for me that I recently learned. It's so simple and so delicious.

Southern Italian Turkey Pasta Puttanesca
(Serves: 4-6)

Recipe: Southern Italian Turkey Pasta Puttanesca

INGREDIENTS:

2 cups grape tomatoes
1 tsp olive oil
3 cloves garlic, crushed
5 anchovies, finely chopped
2 turkey sausages
2 tbsp capers
½ cup sundried olives, chopped
2 tbsp fresh basil, chopped
1 tsp hot pepper flakes
350 gr pasta
8 cups water
1 tbsp salt for pasta water
1 tbsp olive oil
3 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese
Salt and pepper to taste

PREPARATION:

Season tomatoes with olive oil, salt, and pepper.
Broil in the oven on the middle rack for 8 – 12 minutes until soft and lightly browned.
Bring 8 cups water to boil; add salt.
Add pasta and follow package instructions. Cook until al dente.
Very important: reserve 1 cup pasta water and set aside.
While pasta is cooking, heat ½ tbsp olive oil in a frying pan over medium heat.
Remove casing from sausage and break up into 1-inch pieces. Add to pan and cook until browned and cooked through.
Add anchovies and garlic and cook until anchovies dissolve and garlic is cooked through 2-3 minutes.
Add roasted tomatoes.
Add olives and capers.
Remove from heat.
Add pasta directly to saucepan.
Add ½ cup of the reserved pasta water and toss.
Add fresh basil, hot pepper and, ½ tsp olive oil.
Add up to ½ cup of additional pasta water, a little at a time, if pasta begins to dry out.
Garnish with parmesan cheese and serve immediately.

TIP: This dish works well with leftover turkey too. Just substitute the sausage for some cubed or shredded turkey breast or thighs for an equally delicious pasta dish.
