Winter Waxing - Why It’s Important

As the temperature continues to drop each week, we are inevitably becoming a little bit lazier (gasp!) with our typical beauty routine. Let’s face it, now that the motivation of tiny bikinis and warm summer afternoons has passed, our normal waxing routine and smooth-skin-dreams passed too.

However, did you know though if you prefer waxing as a hair removal method, it is crucial to keep up with your regular waxing routine even if you’re in hibernation mode? Noemi Grupenmager, founder and CEO of Uni K Wax Centers notes that, “maintaining regular waxes year-round will benefit you in the long run because waxing weakens the hair follicle, causing hair to grow back slower, lighter and thinner over time.” Plus, she shares, “dry, winter hair is more likely to break when waxing, causing it to grow back faster and thicker, so you want to keep skin hydrated and healthy (ie. drink lots of water and exfoliate regularly.)” Uni K Wax Centers’ all-natural elastic wax is ideal for sensitive skin and formulated with natural beeswax and pine tree resin full of essential oils to hydrate, exfoliate and moisturize skin – super important in the cold winter months.

Video Shooter: Mastering Storytelling Techniques (Third Edition)

From Barry Braverman the 2nd Unit cinematographer of Moonrise Kingdom and Wes Anderson's original short subject Bottle Rocket comes Video Shooter: Mastering Storytelling Techniques, Third Edition, a new book from The Focal Press. Video Shooter is a uniquely humorous and insightful guidebook that goes beyond the equipment and shooting technicalities to instill a practical and deep appreciation for the craft of visual storytelling. In his book Braverman draws from decades of experience working on high-profile documentaries and feature films to explain the makings of a truly compelling cinematic experience and program.

To Braverman, the sharing of his knowledge and the teaching of camera craft are a humanitarian calling. This new edition features lessons based on the author's experiences leading workshops throughout the world, from New Orleans to Cairo, empowering the world's people, young and not so young, to capture and relate the most effective video stories they can for the betterment of themselves and their communities.

MY THOUGHTS

There's a lot of useful information and tips you need to know for film-making and storytelling. This edition teaches the shooter how to maintain a clear point of view and eyeline, to consider the emotional impact of lens choice and color, and how to avoid generic shots and angles. He also talks about how to identify and land your ideal job, and work successfully with ego-crazed collaborators.

Unique to the Third Edition, the book instructs the reader how to exploit the camera's capabilities to the maximum whether shooting with the world's most sophisticated 4K camcorder or a simple iPhone. The book is intended for video storytellers of all types, from event videographers to feature filmmakers, as it explores the discipline of 2D and 3D imaging and camera craft.  The reader will also learn how close-ups can drive a story, and how composition, selective focus, and simple lighting help direct the viewer's eye inside the frame. Other lessons included in this edition are:
  • 3D storytelling and techniques fundamentals of image capture and stereo production with an emphasis on simple integrated one-piece 3D camcorders
  • Video storytelling with DSLRs how to get the best look out of these large sensor cameras despite the compromises
  • Post-camera imaging, filtering, stabilizing
  • Encoding and outputting a show to the Web or DVD
  • Insights into the working life of a video shooter - how to identify and land your ideal job, and work successfully with ego-crazed collaborators
  • End of chapter study guides with review questions for educators

Photo of the Day: White Cockatoo

The White Cockatoo (Cacatua alba), also known as the Umbrella Cockatoo, is a medium-sized all white cockatoo endemic to tropical rainforest on islands of Indonesia. When surprised, it extends a large and striking head crest, which has a semicircular shape (similar to an umbrella, hence the alternative name). The undersides of the wings and tail have a pale yellow or lemon color which flashes when they fly. It is similar to other species of white cockatoo such as Yellow-Crested Cockatoo, Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo, and Salmon-Crested Cockatoo, all of which have yellow, orange or pink crest feathers instead of white. - Wikipedia

Trusted Health Products 'Beautiful' Skin Care {Review & Giveaway}

You may have been told to never put oils on your face, because oils supposedly cause breakouts or blemishes. This statement alone couldn’t be further from the truth. Sebum, the natural oil produced by your body, is a vital component in keeping your skin moist, elastic, healthy and radiant. The problem comes in when your body over-produces sebum. One of the main causes of this, as mentioned above, is the use of harsh chemical-laden skincare products that strip the natural oils from your face. But when your face’s oils are given what they need in order to remain in balance, the result is beautiful, young looking, glowing skin. This happens because Beautiful works in harmony with nature.

MY THOUGHTS

I recently received 2 bottle set of Beautiful Skin Care personalized with my name: Beautiful Jennie AM Moisturizer and Beautiful Jennie PM Revitalizer (Thanks to Trusted Health Products). I really like that it contains natural ingredients and the scent was not over-powering. Beautiful uses a rare combination of live fruit, nut and plant extracts to feed your skin cells and promote youthful, moist, beautiful glowing skin.

At first, I was kinda wary of applying oil products on my skin as I have oily skin (especially in the T-zone). As per the application instructions, best to use 2-3 drops daily and gently spread over entire face in circular motion. Remember not to rub it in.  It blends it very smoothly and I love that citrus scent! It doesn't contain sunscreen, so you'll have to apply your own sunscreen over your skin before exposing to sunlight.

I did get a few breakouts in my chin area, but not sure if it is from using the product. The pamphlet says it's normal as it is trying to get rid of the toxins. I also tried it as a makeup remover with a Qtip or makeup remover pads.  I removes eye makeup very well! I prefer this method. My skin looks and feels smoother after a few weeks of use and my fine lines are less noticeable.

Detox - Your skin is probably used to name-brand products made from creams, chemicals, and other toxic ingredients that can give your skin results, but by shocking your skin into submission.

If you’ve used makeup or commercial skin care products for any length of time, your skin is probably clogged and burdened with the build-up of excess oils and environmental junk that comes from the ingredients in these products. Beautiful takes up to 30 days to help detoxify your skin from these chemicals and ingredients so that your skin can thrive naturally. Results vary for each person.

Here is the breakdown of the 7 pure botanical oils found in Beautiful AM Moisturizer and PM Revitalizer along with their benefits:

Almond - Moisturizes, soothes and softens skin, relieves itching from dry skin and gives complexion appearance of improvement and glow.
Orange - Cleanses the skin through natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties to help fight acne and restore smooth appearance to skin.
Lemon - Natural cleanser, preventative for wrinkling and aging. Significantly increases the anti-oxidative potential of the skin bio surface (to help stop damage to the skin).
Olive - Cleanser and moisturizer. Has shown preventative effects for formation of skin cancer and tumors.
Avocado - Significantly increases the soluble collagen content in the skin to enrich dry, damaged, chapped or wounded skin. Loaded with vitamins A, D and E.
Evening Primose - The nutrients in Evening Primrose Oil are essential for cell structure and improve the elasticity of the skin. There is evidence that it can help reduce wrinkles and even help repair stretch marks. It is also rich omega 6 fatty acids.
Apricot - light and gently moisturizes the skin. Containing vitamins A and E, it soothes the skin and slows signs of aging as well as firming and toning.

Features & Benefits:
  • Skin looks and feels younger, softer and smooth like silk
  • Decreases the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and crow’s feet
  • Reduces the appearance of aging
  • Replaces dirty, excess oil with healthy botanical oils
  • Firms and tones skin’s appearance
  • Feeds your skin cells the nutrients they crave

Three Ways to Get Skin Camera Ready for the Holidays

Oh, the holidays. Beginning with Halloween, continuing through Thanksgiving, and going strong into the New Year, these densely packed months rapidly turn into a blur of photo ops. Not feeling camera ready? Dr. Vish Banthia, founder of ZendyBeauty, the online beauty resource that helps you look fabulous at your price, gives three simple ways to help prepare you for your close up.

TURN BACK THE CLOCK

Lazy summer days spent at the beach fade into sun damaged skin, leaving your complexion looking red, mottled, and lackluster for fall. Turn back the clock by shedding a little light on the situation. IPL treatments even out skin tone, shrink pores, and treat rosacea. Added bonus, a recent Stanford University study showed that IPL treatments alter gene expression of skin at a molecular level. This causes older cells to behave and function like younger cells, proving that it just may be possible to turn back the clock.

NEED A LIFT?

If you feel as if life is starting to drag you down, elevate yourself with Ultherapy. This non-invasive procedure battles aging collagen by using concentrated heat to stimulate new collagen growth. Ultherapy treats the same layer of skin targeted in cosmetic surgery, the one that lifts, supports, and controls skin tension. Have a facelift without a scalpel and turn your favorite scarf back into an accessory, instead of a necessity.

SHINE BRIGHT LIKE A DIAMOND

Has your summer glow diminished, leaving you looking flat for fall? Freshen and brighten up your complexion with microdermabrasion. This simple, yet highly effective treatment cleans and maintains your skin. Microderm removes dead skin cells while stimulating new cell growth. Regular sessions can reduce the appearance of a number of skin imperfections, including fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, and large pores. Slip into your dazzling party shoes and shine bright for the New Year.

Recipe: Healthy and Delicious Apple Turnovers

Not only is harvest season for apples upon us, but did you know October happens to be National Apple Month? I would love to share with you a recipe for Apple Turnovers courtesy of WearEver. It's the perfect snack to prepare in celebration of Fall. WearEver’s Apple Turnover recipe is easy and quick to prepare, and is sure to be a favorite among your family and friends.

The NEW WearEver Pure Living Bakeware collection features ceramic coated surfaces, which are free of PFOA, PTFE, and cadmium - a safe, eco-friendly alternative to nonstick. Durable and easy-to-use, the bakeware is dishwasher safe, scratch resistant, stain resistant and high temperature resistant, as well as suitable for use with metal utensils. MSRP: Large Cookie Sheet $11.99. Available September 2013 at Kroger and Fred Meyer.

Apple Turnovers
(courtesy of WearEver)

INGREDIENTS:

· 2 tablespoons lemon juice
· 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
· 4 cups water
· 1 tablespoon cornstarch
· 4 Granny Smith apples - peeled, cored and sliced
· 1 tablespoon water
· 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
· 1 (17.25 ounce) package frozen puff
· 1 cup brown sugar, packed
· Pastry sheets, thawed

PREPARATION:

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Use two large ungreased WearEver Cookie Sheets.
  2. Combine the lemon and 4 cups water in a large bowl. Place the sliced apples in the water to keep them from browning.
  3. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Drain water from apples, and place them into the hot skillet. Cook and stir for about 2 minutes. Add brown sugar, and cinnamon, and cook, stirring, for 2 more minutes. Stir together cornstarch and 1 tablespoon water. Pour into the skillet, and mix well. Cook for another minute, or until sauce has thickened. Remove from heat to cool slightly.
  4. Unfold puff pastry sheets, and repair any cracks by pressing them back together. Trim each sheet into a square. Then cut each larger square into 4 smaller squares. Spoon apples onto the center of each square. Fold over from corner to corner into a triangle shape, and press edges together to seal. Place turnovers on a baking sheet, leaving about 1-inch between them.
  5. Bake for 25 minutes in the preheated oven, until turnovers are puffed and lightly browned.

Three Ways to Add Some Beauty to Your Sleep

Want to add some beauty to your sleep? Dr. Vish Banthia, founder of ZendyBeauty, the online beauty resource that helps you look fabulous at your price, gives three simple ways to help maximize your beauty zzzzzzz’s.

Your skin uses sleep hours to heal itself from the day’s damage. When you drift off, it gets the chance to improve. Use a good night cream and get great skin with your eyes closed.

Replenish

Not only does moisturizing your skin have a soothing effect, it also helps prevent dehydration, which contributes to the visual signs aging. Look for a cream that contains hyaluronic acid (HA). Slather on this natural component of skin’s connective tissues, to hydrate and firm up skin cells.

Repair

Collagen is a protein that makes up the connective tissues of the human body. As we age there is a loss of collagen, which can lead to wrinkles and or also sagging skin. Apply vitamin C to help promote build-up of collagen. This powerful antioxidant has been shown to minimize fine lines and, in some cases, pigmentation.

Renew

When we are children our skin turns over approximately every 14 days. As teens, our cells turn over approximately every 21 to 28 days. As we age, cell turnover slows down to 30 to 40 days, and after we reach 50 and older, cell turnover can slow to 1-1/2 to 3 months. Products with retinol help to promote cell turnover so that skin is constantly being refreshed. Lavish richly to improve fine lines, skin texture, skin tone.

For faster and longer lasting results, consider microdermabrasion, superficial chemical peels, or lPL. Combined with effective products, these corrective treatments provide optimal results.
